Protests in Valley on Geelani’s call

Security personnel attacked with stones, none injured

Protests in Valley on Geelani’s callProtests and clashes broke out here today in response to hardline separatist Syed Ali Geelani’s call seeking punishment for security forces personnel, who allegedly killed five civilians in Kupwara district in protests earlier this month.
The youth threw stones on the security forces deployed outside Jamia Masjid at the Nowhatta locality after Friday congregational prayers.
To disperse the stone throwers, who were also waving Jammu Kashmir Islamic State flags, the security forces fired over a dozen tear gas shells and rubber bullets. However, no one was injured in the clashes.
Geelani had called for protests against the suspension of five employees, “continued police detention” of the teenaged Handwara girl and denial of holding funeral prayers in absentia of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front co-founder Amanullah Khan, who died earlier this week.
Protests demonstrations were also held at hardline separatist bastions — Hyderpora and Maisuma localities of Srinagar — in response to the Geelani’s call. Protesters were carrying posters seeking punishment against the security forces personnel.
To thwart the protest from affecting the normal life, the security forces swung into action and detained the protagonists.
